The highlight of the day will be a special pageant for the community at 12pm when school groups, families and individuals can all get into the spirit of the day by dressing up in Coronation or 1950s inspired costumes and joining in the parade. Prizes will be given for the best dressed in each category, whilst of course the pictures of the event will create new memories and be part of the rich history of the park.
The pageant will be led by a military style marching band, who will then take their seats on a band stand to play for the visitors to the park.
There will be an Exhibition showing the history of our much loved park and a second marquee will serve as a ‘homage’ to the old Royalty Ballroom, so people can dance to music in the style of 1952.
Retro children’s games will be available, a dog show and other activities including a cinema tent showing historic films of Grovelands Park, as well as a memory tent where visitors can record their own precious memories of Grovlands Park. Southgate Photographic Society are organising a photographic competition with an exhibition of park related pictures.
To mark the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee for future generations an oak tree will be planted near to the Centenary oak we planted in 2013.
We are also delighted that local Craft Shop Stich will be displaying
the Community Jubilee Collage. A project invovling schools and local volunteers across the borough who have contributed to this creative craft project.
You can either bring your own picnic (no barbecues) and relax with your families to enjoy the day or there will be some food and coffee concessions available.
Days like this can only happen with the support of volunteers but it is hoped that residents will enthusiastically get involved with this community event and join the Friends of Grovelands Park to help organise supporting attractions. The Friends of Grovelands Park will underwrite the infrastructure costs of this event using funds generated by the successful Centenary Celebrations in 2013, the last significant historic date for the park but other much needed sources of funding and donations are being sought to make this a very special day to remember (4th June 2022) . Please donate whatever you can.
As part of our oral history project we want to talk to any local residents who are about 80 or over, who have memories of the park from the 1950s and earlier.
